i-CATTM Announces “Their Story”

With compelling stories of real-world cases, dental professionals a chance to witness how i-CAT cone beam 3D imaging help improve dental issues leading to a better quality of life.
Hatfield, PA (March 26, 2015) i-CAT, a brand of the KaVo Kerr Group, is proud to introduce a fresh new marketing microsite called “Their Story.” Through a fully-integrated multimedia campaign, the platform casts a growing collection of stories that illustrates how doctors are changing patients’ lives every day. Each is told by the doctor (and in some cases their patients) and contains a rich set of information, including a case report, select videos, images and more.
i-CAT, with its balance between image quality and dose allows these clinicians to detect anatomical anomalies and see vital structures that would not be visible with 2D imaging, and in some cases, at a dose comparable to a 2D panoramic X-ray*. i-CAT software also offers these dental professionals effective tools for diagnosis of conditions related to airway disorders.
The first “Their Story,” submitted by Orthodontist Dr. Juan-Carlos Quintero, describes how he was able to deliver the clinical outcomes that changed 7-year-old Sebastian’s life. Sebastian had been suffering from both dental and medical issues. At Sebastian’s orthodontic visit, the information from an i-CAT scan and the treatment planning software, Tx STUDIOTM helped enable Dr. Quintero to determine how to treat him orthodontically, but also pinpointed a significant blockage of his airway. After collaborative treatment with medical professionals, the results were dramatic and illustrate the impact that orthodontists can have if they have the right tools to better visualize the anatomy and help create an individualized treatment plan. This landmark case has forever changed the way that Dr. Quintero practices.
Dr. Quintero explained why he submitted his story. “It is a wonderful time in orthodontics as our profession enters a new horizon with low dose 3D imaging. I am pleased to be able to share a very personal story on how this technology can profoundly improve the quality of life of our patients. I hope the story inspires others to look beyond traditional 2D imaging and really see their patients!”
Dr. Robert Kaspers’ “Their Story” centers around an adult patient named Fiaz whose i-CAT scan’s information helped Dr. Kaspers to treat not only his improper bite, but a severe constriction of his airway as well. After surgical and orthodontic treatment, Fiaz was able to experience a drastic improvement in his quality of life.
Dr. Kaspers shared, “I can only hope that by telling Fiaz’s story that more orthodontists realize that 3D radiography
has so much to offer our profession. Before acquiring my i-CAT, I was severely limited in diagnosing my patients to a balanced occlusion, and I didn’t even consider a patient’s airway. The i-CAT was the best investment I have ever made.”

The i-CAT team is excited about this campaign and the impactful stories from using i-CAT technology. “We are grateful that these two clinicians shared their powerful “Their Stories,” and we are even happier that the treatment had a profound effect on their health. By sharing these stories, we hope to show how 3D imaging can help in the process of diagnosis,” states Rick Matty, Director of Marketing for i-CAT. “We look forward to hearing many more accounts of how i-CAT showed the details that led to a life-changing diagnosis.

also welcomes dental professionals to share their life changing stories by contacting us through this microsite. You can join the conversation on i-CAT’s social media sites on Facebook, www.facebook.com/iCAT3D,

For those of you who are Invisalign providers and own a CEREC system instead of an iTero, here is good news from the IDS meeting last week in Germany...

COLOGNE, GERMANY and SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/10/15 -- Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALGN) today announced that Sirona's CEREC Omnicam can be used for Invisalign® case submissions, which require an intraoral scanner that can readily capture a full arch digital impression. This enables Invisalign providers with a CEREC Omnicam intraoral camera and the new CEREC Ortho Software 1.1 to submit a digital impression in place of a traditional PVS impression as part of the Invisalign case submission process. This new CEREC Ortho software is expected to be rolled out in the summer of 2015.

The CEREC Omnicam is the second third-party scanner that has been qualified for use with Invisalign treatment. Align Technology's own iTero® scanner was qualified for Invisalign case submission in December 2011. Align Technology supports an open systems approach to digital impressions and continues to work with intraoral scanning companies interested in developing interoperability and chair-side applications for use with Invisalign treatment.
CEREC Omnicam customers who are interested in becoming an Invisalign trained provider can find further information on training courses athttp://provider.invisalign.com for North America and www.invisalign.eu for International regions.

The Companies also announced an agreement to support iTero laboratory customers and enable them to join a direct all-digital workflow with Sirona's inLab software. With the release of inLab 15.0, scheduled for later in the year, technicians can directly import iTero scan data into inLab.
"We are excited to establish this important collaboration with Sirona to provide Invisalign and iTero customers with new options for their digital workflows," said Tim Mack, Align Technology vice president, business development. "Our commitment to an open systems approach and adding the industry leader gives our customers more flexibility in treating their patients."

Sirona customers should contact their sales representative for more information about CEREC Omnicam connectivity for Invisalign case submission and expected availability of the new CEREC Ortho software and inLab software 15.0.

What Does NY’s E-prescribing Mandate Mean for You?

Read my article in Inside Dentistry by clicking the link below:

Toronto, Canada - New clinical research findings were announced last week in Boston at the International Association of Dental (IADR) Research General Session. Dr. Ben Amaechi from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, who led an independent clinical study, found The Canary System® to exhibit superior performance compared to bitewing radiography for the detection of proximal caries.
Thirty subjects from a mixed population of caries risk patients were involved in the study. The authors of the study found the sensitivity/specificity of The Canary System to be 0.92/0.78 versus 0.67/0.54 for bitewing radiography. The authors of the study concluded that The Canary System is more accurate than bitewing radiography for proximal caries diagnosis.
“Bitewing radiographs and visual examination have been considered the gold standard for caries detection but this study along with others demonstrate that The Canary System should become the next gold standard for the detection and monitoring of tooth decay”, said Dr. Stephen Abrams, President of Quantum Dental Technologies Inc, the manufacturer of The Canary System.
Other research presented at IADR included a study showing the effectiveness of The Canary System for detecting smooth surface caries compared to radiography, DIAGNOdent, and Spectra; a study showing excellent intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility of The Canary System for scanning smooth and occlusal surfaces with natural decay; and a report demonstrating the power of combining cloud computing and The Canary System to provide epidemiological data and trends on caries prevalence among populations, age groups, geographies, and tooth type and surface.
The Canary System, with its unique crystal structure diagnostics, allows oral health professionals to detect, image, track and monitor tooth decay on all tooth surfaces, beneath opaque sealants, around the margins of restorations and detect cracks in teeth.  The accompanying Canary Cloud (www.thecanarycloud.com) enables dentists to view and manage this data in an online environment, track Canary usage in the office, and keep up-to-date on Canary products and clinical news.  With The Canary System, caries detection is not simply shining a light on a tooth surface but it’s about gathering accurate information on the status of the tooth’s crystal structure and then storing it to allow ongoing analysis and monitoring.

Parents have harder time getting kids to brush than to eat vegetables

Delta Dental provides tips to motivate kids to brush and floss

Nearly half of parents (45 percent) say getting kids to brush their teeth is one of the most challenging things to get their kids to do. That’s slightly higher than getting children to eat vegetables regularly (42 percent) or getting their help with household chores (41 percent). Forty-one percent of parents also said it was a challenge to get their kids to floss their teeth regularly.
Therefore, it’s not surprising most parents think their children’s oral health isn’t as good as it could be because they don’t brush (52 percent) or floss (38 percent) often enough. Almost a third (32 percent) of parents admit that their children’s teeth are brushed just once a day or less often, and a majority (61 percent) report their child’s teeth are flossed less often than once a day.

“At some point, most parents will struggle with getting their children to brush and floss. Until they are a little older, it’s hard for kids to understand the importance of oral health,” says Dr. Bill Kohn, DDS, Delta Dental Plans Association’s vice president of dental science and policy. “If parents make sure children’s teeth are brushed and flossed from a very young age, it becomes part of the routine without question.”

Parents are working to get on the right track, however, according to the survey. Fifty-eight percent of parents have specifically made oral hygiene a routine in their homes, and 31 percent have asked other family members to enforce good oral health habits. As far as their strategies to encourage good habits, parents are more likely to give rewards for good behavior (53 percent) than punish bad behavior (16 percent) to get their children to take care of their teeth.
Delta Dental provides some positive ways to make brushing and flossing an easier item on the to-do list.

Be a role model. Kids love to imitate their parents. So when they are young, make dental care a family activity by brushing and flossing in front of and with children. Among parents who have taken recent action to improve their children’s oral health, nearly four in 10 (39 percent) are already doing this by brushing their teeth at the same time as their kids do. During family brushing time, reverse roles and let your child brush your teeth. It’s fun for them and demonstrates the correct way to brush.t rmember, do not share a toothbrush.

Reward good oral health. More than half of parents (53 percent) say rewarding kids for good behavior would be the best way to get them more excited about improving oral health. Create a chart that keeps track of daily oral health habits and reward kids for consistently completing tasks.

Call in reinforcements: For parents whose children stubbornly neglect to brush or floss, maybe it's time to change the messenger. Call the dental office before the next checkup and let them know what's going on. The same motivational message might be better received if it comes from a third party, like the dentist.

American Academy of Periodontology Publishes Proceedings from 2014 Workshop on Regeneration

Clinical recommendations and practical application reports available in Journal of Periodontology, Clinical Advances in Periodontics

CHICAGO (February 27, 2015)–The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has released the official proceedings from its June 2014 workshop on regenerative therapies for periodontal disease. Systematic reviews and consensus reports from the “Enhancing Periodontal Health through Regenerative Approaches” workshop are published in a supplement to the February 2015 edition of the Journal of Periodontology. Practical application reports, intended to guide dental professionals in the application of periodontal regeneration in the clinical setting, are available in the February 2015 issue Clinical Advances in Periodontics.
"The workshop was an amazing collaborative effort that provides the most current consensus of therapies and technologies in regenerative treatment,” says AAP president Joan Otomo-Corgel, DDS, MPH. “We’re thrilled to share the results of the these dynamic discussions. This pioneering information will provide tremendous benefit to the periodontal specialty, the dental community, and the patients we treat.”
Fifty-two workshop participants met in Chicago last summer to conduct a systematic review of existing literature, culminating in the development of consensus reports and practical applications to aid practitioners in the clinical environment. Topics of the workshop included the following:
·       Periodontal Soft Tissue Root Coverage Procedures: Managing gingival recession based on current evidence with a primary outcome goal of complete root coverage
·       Periodontal Soft Tissue Non-Root Coverage Procedures: Assessing the need for gingival augmentation procedures (non-root coverage) around natural teeth
·       Intrabony Defects: Periodontal regenerative strategies for the management of intrabony periodontal defects
·       Furcation Defects: How periodontal furcation defects should be managed via periodontal regenerative therapy and what parameters should be used for treatment selection
·       Emerging Regenerative Approaches for Periodontal Reconstruction: Can emerging technologies for periodontal regeneration become clinical reality?
The practical application reports provide the unique component of the workshop. Each practical application paper describes a specific clinical situation, different approaches that may be considered in its management, and how to make treatment decisions based on the provided evidence. Clinical Advances in Periodontics also offers illustrative images and videos that further detail the clinical situation, how it was managed, and its expected treatment outcomes.

The workshop was spearheaded by an AAP-designated organizing committee, co-chaired by William Giannobile, DDS, MS, DMSc, and Pamela McClain, DDS. The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, Geistlich Pharma North America, Colgate-Palmolive, and the Osteology Foundation partnered with the AAP to provide support of the workshop’s programming.
The AAP regularly organizes consensus workshops on issues surrounding the science and practice of periodontics. Past sessions include the 2010 Workshop on Inflammation and a 2012 joint session with the European Federation of Periodontology on periodontal disease and systemic diseases.
About the American Academy of Periodontology
The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) represents over 8,000 periodontists—specialists in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of inflammatory diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.

Carestream Dental Partners with exocad Software to Support Systems Integration

Partnership Offers Clinicians the Opportunity to Send Cases Directly to Labs
ATLANTA—Carestream Dental has partnered with exocad, an OEM dental CAD/CAM software solutions provider, to offer systems integration with the CS Solutions product portfolio.
exocad design software is compatible with Carestream Dental’s CS 3500 intraoral scanner, which allows practitioners to easily acquire true color, 2D and 3D images. Requiring no external heater or trolley system, the CS 3500 features high-angulation scanning of up to 45 degrees and to a depth from -2 to +13mm. Additionally, the CS 3500 uses open-format STL files for easy sharing and can be plugged directly into a computer’s USB—making it a truly portable scanner option. The integration with exocad benefits practices that wish to incorporate digital impressions and easy collaboration with labs into their workflow.
Using exocad's cloud service “dentalshare,” clinicians and client labs can collaborate more rapidly. New workflows, such as lab-assisted chairside CAD/CAM, can now be created by any laboratory or clinician. The ability to transfer even large and complex cases in minimal time fosters new business opportunities and efficiencies for resellers, while allowing labs and clinicians to build their business by increasing productivity and strengthening personal relationships.
"As Carestream Dental expands into the CAD/CAM market, the ability to integrate with other CAD/CAM software providers is critical," Joe Andrasko, regional product manager, CS Solutions, Carestream Dental, said. “We are looking forward to working with exocad and we are excited to offer this solution to our customers.”
Resellers of exocad software will be able to offer a unique and innovative workflow solution to their customers by pairing the CS 3500 with exocad’s new dentalshare software feature.  Due to the integration, validation and certification of Carestream Dental’s clinical solutions, the implementation risk to resellers is low. Installation, training and support for the CS 3500 are provided by Carestream Dental, allowing resellers to continue to focus on providing exocad software support and service.
"We immediately found development synergy with Carestream Dental’s CS 3500 intraoral scanner and our new dentalshare real time lab collaboration,” Larry Bodony, president, exocad America, said. “The ability for our technologies to combine is extremely beneficial to a clinician’s workflow and we are excited to work with Carestream Dental in this partnership moving forward.”

Brasseler USA® Introduces Refreshed Brand Identity

New Look Unveiled at Special Event During the 2015 Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting Showcases What Sets Company Apart

SAVANNAH, GA (February 26, 2015) – Brasseler USA®, the premier dental instrumentation Company in North America, recently introduced a new branding initiative to be implemented throughout 2015 and beyond. The Company unveiled some of the components of its recent efforts, such as a refreshed logo, at an exclusive reception held for members of the media at this year’s Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting.

Though the updated brand identity will be gradually introduced, Brasseler USA had many noticeable changes at the Midwinter meeting that reflected the new approach including a newly designed tradeshow booth as well as updated marketing materials, business cards, and stationery. Other components showcasing the new look will be progressively integrated over time.

Brasseler USA’s tagline, “By Your Side”, embodies what sets the Company apart. “Our tagline has been refined to broaden its meaning,” remarked Don Waters, President and CEO of Brasseler USA. “‘By Your Side’ reflects our passion to support dentists in delivering predictable and consistent clinical results. Through collaboration with key opinion leaders recognized for their expertise, Brasseler USA develops innovative products which provide solutions and thereby enhance clinical practice.  Our consultative, direct-sales approach means that Brasseler USA is by the dentists’ side. We are committed to remain ‘By Your Side’ for many years to come.”

The Company has had many noteworthy innovations since entering the dental marketplace almost 40 years ago, such as its unique direct-sales approach. Founder Peter Brasseler felt that the best way to assure that clinicians received the products and ongoing service they deserved was to have his products only sold direct.

“Peter Brasseler believed that the most meaningful path to success was to develop strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders recognized for their expertise who actually use the products in practice,” stated Waters. “To bring these products to market, Peter established a direct-sales model where Brasseler USA sales consultants sell only Brasseler USA branded products. Each member of our sales team has in-depth knowledge of dental procedures and the products needed to provide predictable results. Remember, Brasseler USA products are only available through Brasseler USA sales representatives.”

Another aspect that sets the Company apart is its focus on instrumentation. As a result, the Company is able to anticipate market needs, especially around modern materials, and design and create precise instrumentation supporting minimally-invasive dental procedures. Brasseler USA prides itself on providing best-of-class instrumentation for use in dental laboratories, restorative dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery, and oral hygiene.

The Company has formed extremely close working relationships through the years with the most respected clinicians and educators in the profession in order to develop products that truly elevate clinical practice. Collaboration with highly regarded thought leaders has led to product development supporting both efficient practice and consistent results.

“Our recent branding efforts were initiated to reinvigorate the classic Brasseler USA brand that dental professionals know and trust,” continued Waters. “Our fundamental philosophy and practice of working to support and elevate clinical practice remains the same. Our customers value quality and precision in their instruments to deliver excellent oral healthcare to their patients. Brasseler USA is, and always has been, proud to be ‘By Your Side’ as a true partner in professional success.”
