Study: 91% Of US Adults Have Had Dental Caries In Permanent Teeth.

TIME (5/13, Sifferlin) reports that a new study from the NIH and CDC found that 91 percent of US adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have had dental caries in permanent teeth as of 2011-2012, and among 65-year-olds, 96 percent have tooth decay. TIME adds that more than a quarter of adults ages 20 to 64 have untreated tooth decay, while “Hispanic and black adults had more untreated cavities compared with white and Asian adults ages 20 to 64,” with black adults at a rate of 42 percent. The study also found that “American adults ages 20 to 39 were twice as likely to have all their teeth, compared with adults ages 40 to 64.”

Carestream Dental Introduces New Scanning Cephalometric Unit to Enhance Orthodontists’ Diagnostic Capabilities

SAN FRANCISCO—The CS 8100SC* scanning cephalometric imaging system, first introduced at CDA South, is built on the award-winning technology of the CS 8100 panoramic system and allows practitioners to add digital cephalometric imaging to their practice for more diagnostic capabilities.
In addition to its compact design, the system features the fastest scanning times of any cephalometric unit on the market—up to 80 percent faster. Short exposure times reduce patient dose and the risk of motion blur, making it an ideal unit to use with young patients. Plus, practitioners have the option to choose from two scanning modes–including a high-resolution mode for the highest image quality and a fast scan mode for exposure time that is more than twice as fast.
With a full range of image formats, the CS 8100SC is an ideal unit for every day orthodontic and oral surgery needs. Up to three image sizes can be selected—from 26 x 24 cm, 18 x 24 cm to 18 x 18 cm. Clinicians also have the option to choose from a variety of views including lateral, oblique, frontal (AP/PA) and carpus** to capture consistently clear images. The unit includes two sensors as a standard: one for cephalometric and one for panoramic imaging Due to this design, there is no need to change the sensor between examinations, reducing manipulation and preventing the risk of damage to the unit.
Advanced Carestream Dental imaging software has the ability to recognize anatomical structures and trace them automatically, making the CS 8100SC the only cephalometric unit to offer automatic tracing. Covering the most common analysis needs (including McNamara, Ricketts, Steiner and Tweed), the software editor also allows practitioners to personalize tracings and to create customized templates for improved treatment planning.
“The CS 8100SC is an efficient tool for doctors who don’t want to sacrifice valuable practice space for cephalometric imaging,” Edward Shellard, DMD, vice president, global sales and marketing, Carestream Dental, said. “Due to the unit’s powerful performance and small size, doctors are now able to perform a wider range of diagnoses and treatments right in their office, rather than referring their patients to imaging centers.”
The system’s advanced technology combines an all-new 4T CMOS sensor, state-of-the-art scanning technology and generator to provide practitioners with high-quality images. Orthodontic pre-set filters optimize the visualization of hard and soft tissues with just one click, while the CS Adapt module allows for even greater customization of an image’s look and feel to suit a clinician’s personal preferences.

The Annual Session takes place in San Francisco, Calif., May 15-19, at the Moscone Center. Learn more about the CS 8100CS in booth number 1605. For more information on Carestream Dental’s innovative solutions or to request a product demonstration, call 800.944.6365 or visit

“What Dentists Need to Know about Medicare NOW”

If you are confused about what your office should do about the impeding Medicare sign up then this book is for you. Patti, Christine and Jan through examples show you which status to pick! Very simple and straight forward. MJ

Newly-Published DentalCodeology eBook Explains the Complexity of New Medicare Rules Their Impact on Dentistry

“What Dentists Need to Know about Medicare NOW”
is Now Available in Digital Format

Addison, IL – May 20, 2015 – Patti DiGangi, RDH, BS, a prominent dental hygiene thought leader, recently published the 4th installment of her continuing DentalCodeology mini-book series entitled “What Dentists Need to Know about Medicare NOW”

For this edition of the popular mini-book series, Patti partnered again with insurance coding authority Christine Taxin, and with another qualified coding and Medicare expert, Jan Palmer to provide dentists with an easy-to-follow primer on how to make informed Medicare decisions that will benefit their patients and practices alike.

“The time is now for dentists to get smart about Medicare,” says DiGangi. She further states that the new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) ruling that goes into effect on January 1, 2016 will impact many older patients if their dentists prescribe medication, perform biopsies that require pathology tests, or simply refer their Medicare-eligible patients to a specialist.

DiGangi warns that the Medicaid opt-out clause can be particularly confusing and may have a devastating financial impact if not fully-understood. For example, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services published a final rule in May 2014 that requires all physicians and eligible professionals—including dentists—who prescribe Part D covered drugs to be enrolled in Medicare or opt-out for those prescriptions to be covered under Part D.

Here’s the tricky part - by signing an affidavit to opt-out out of the program, dentists are out of the
Medicare system for two years - not one year. This means that they cannot receive any direct or
indirect Medicare payment for services provided to Medicare patients during that time.

“Two years is a long time to sit on the Medicare bench,” states DiGangi. “With the aging of our baby boomers, opting-out of Medicare may cause many of their patients to abandon dentists that didn’t may any choice at all. The dentists will leave a lot of money on the table that could be going right to the bottom lines of the practices.”

Early reviews of the mini-book have been extremely favorable. For example, practice-building thought leader Linda Miles had this to say, “Every member of your team should not only read this, but have their own copy for easy referencing. It would cost thousands of dollars and many hours of a team’s time to discover all this information and these resources on their own.”

In situ remineralizing effect of fluoride varnishes containing sodium trimetaphosphate

This study analyzed the effects of a fluoride (F) varnish supplemented with sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) on the remineralization of caries-like lesions in situ.

Materials and methods

Twelve subjects used palatal devices with demineralized enamel discs for 3 days, following a double-blind, crossover protocol. Test groups included placebo (no F or TMP), 5 % NaF and 5 % NaF/5 % TMP varnishes. The percentage of surface hardness recovery (%SHR) and cross-sectional hardness (ΔKHN) were determined.

Significant differences were observed among all varnishes regarding %SHR and ΔKHN. The highest %SHR and the lowest ΔKHN were seen for the 5 % NaF/5 % TMP varnish, followed by 5 % NaF and placebo.

The remineralizing effect of a 5 % NaF varnish is significantly enhanced when associated with TMP.

Clinical relevance

The reduction in the subsurface lesion area of enamel treated with the TMP-containing varnish implies that cavities would take longer to develop or might not develop at all depending on individual factors, resulting in lower net caries increments at individual and population levels.

Rebilda Post II System Kit

VOCO introduces a Post Procedure kit that includes all matching materials used from the post cementation to the final core build-up.

The kit includes 4 sizes of Rebilda Posts, dentin like flexible glass fiber posts with high radiopacity, high translucency and excellent light conductivity with matching reamers and drills.

The award winning dual-cured universal bond Futurabond U, can be used in the self-cured mode without any light. This is a great benefit in the root canal thus avoiding the pooling effect (the blocking of the canal due to cured adhesive). Special Endo Tim brushes allow easy application of the adhesive into the root canal.

The kit promotes the Mono-Bloc Concept. Rebilda DC is used as a cement and core build-up material. This not only saves time, but furthermore creates one mono block from the root canal to the core build-up with the same excellent physical properties. The manufacturer claims that this concept leads to higher success rates. Rebilda DC flows well, but is still stackable and cuts like dentin. Endo Tims make the cement application into the root canal very easy.

The Rebilda Post System kit has been developed with the input of many dentists. Their recommendations led to the inclusion of many procedure oriented application aids such as special brushes, tips and reamers. All materials match each other and take the guesswork out of the procedure leading to faster, more predictable and successful results.

Cefaly to Present Breakthrough Data in Migraine Treatment at International Headache Society Congress

NEW YORK, May 6, 2015_ CEFALY Technology, the creators of the first FDA-approved transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device specifically authorized for use prior to the onset of migraine pain, is set to announce significant breakthroughs in migraine treatment at the EUROHEADPAIN - Midterm Meeting at the International Headache Society Congress in Valencia, Spain, from May 14-17, 2015.
On May 14th, at a meeting of EUROHEADPAIN, a major European research project focused on migraines, CEFALY Technology will present three significant patent pending systems of neuromodulation that are in development. These systems would help to alter nerve activity in migraine patients by combining different currents targeted at specific cranial zones. "Thanks to these new systems, over the next few years, we will be able to develop the most efficient and safest treatments for migraines,” said Dr. Pierre Rigaux, chief executive officer of CEFALY Technology, the maker of the device.
On May 16th, during the Late-Breaking Oral presentations, results will be released from a clinical trial on cerebral changes as demonstrated by Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan in migraine patients treated with a Cefaly® device. The PET scan, an imaging test of the brain, used a radioactive substance called a tracer to show how the brain and its tissues are working under the influence of a Cefaly®.
“New data shows the Cefaly action on brain metabolism in specific cortical zones of migraine patients,” said Dr. Rigaux. "The modifications observed through brain imaging reinforce the strong clinical data on safety and efficacy that led to the FDA approval.”
In March 2014, the FDA approved the prescription-only, headband-like, device that uses tiny electrical impulses to stimulate the trigeminal nerve to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. At that time, it reached its decision using data from a randomized double blinded clinical trial implemented in five university clinics in Belgium; as well as a patient satisfaction study of 2,313 Cefaly® users in France.
The International Headache Society is the world's leading membership organization for those with a professional commitment to helping people affected by headache. The 17th IHS Congress takes place in Valencia, Spain, from May 14-17, 2015. In addition to releasing the above data, CEFALY Technology will attend the Congress, exhibiting the Cefaly® device at booth number 3.
About CEFALY Technology
CEFALY Technology is a Belgium-based company specializing in electronics for medical applications. It has developed external cranial stimulation technology for applications in the field of neurology; in particular for treating migraines.

Saving Canines Is i-CAT’s Theme At The AAO As The Company Partners With The Milo Foundation Animal Sanctuary.

An impactful “Their Story” will be presented at the 2015 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Carlson and patient Natalie will be onsite to discuss details of the case along with providing an opportunity to also help man’s best friend.

Hatfield, PA (May 11, 2015) i-CATTM a brand of the KaVo Kerr Group, will exhibit at the 2015 AAO Annual Session, May 15-19, 2015 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA. Unique to this meeting and as part of the company’s “Their Story” campaign launched in November 2014, i-CAT will introduce the latest “Their Story” featuring Dr. Sean Carlson and his patient, Natalie. This growing collection of stories illustrates how doctors are using i-CAT imaging to help better patients’ lives every day. In Natalie’s case of transmigratory impacted canines in the mandibular jaw, information from the i-CAT scan helped Dr. Carlson formulate a treatment that allowed Natalie to save her canines and thus retain her full complement of teeth.
Also at this meeting, the theme of saving canines will be taken to the next level as i-CAT partners with the Milo Foundation, an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter in Northern California. Its mission is to provide education, adoption services, and sanctuary for many types and ages of animals. John Fonseca, Outreach Coordinator for the Milo Foundation will be at the booth on Saturday and Sunday, and attendees
can get their photos taken with some great little canines that will be on site to promote pet care awareness.
John Fonseca noted, “The Milo Foundation is excited to participate with i-CAT in the 2015 AAO Annual Session. As an animal rescue organization, the animals’ good health is extremely important, dental health included. This is an innovative opportunity for us to share information about our work and encourage support to help the many homeless animals not only in California, but throughout the country.”
Jessica Kachmar, Marketing Manager for i-CAT, added, “We are very happy to host Dr. Carlson and Natalie and eager for clinicians to visit with them and discuss their inspiring story at our booth. The success of that treatment entailed much hard work and knowledge from Dr. Carlson, effort and energy from Natalie, and quality 3D cone beam scans from i-CAT. We are also appreciative of the humanitarian work done for needy animals by
The Milo Foundation, and i-CAT will be donating to this worthy cause.”
AAO attendees are encouraged to meet and greet with Dr. Carlson and Natalie, take pictures with Milo Foundation dogs and participate in the other activities in the i-CAT booth No. 2037.

Carestream Dental Showcases New Filter Module for RVG Sensors at AAE Annual Session

SEATTLE—The CS Adapt module is a new, intuitive user interface for Carestream Dental’s RVG 6200 sensor that allows practitioners to select from an unprecedented number of pre-set image enhancement filters according to their visual preference in order to improve diagnostic efficiency.
The module, first introduced at CDA South, features 40 preset filters—including 12 filter presets dedicated specifically to endodontics—so doctors can fine-tune their view according to their clinical needs. Other filters, such as INSIGHT and Ultra-Speed, can replicate the preferred look of traditional film, which simplifies the transition from film to digital. Additional filters produce smooth and contrast-enhanced images, while still others reduce artifacts around radio-opaque materials, to give just a few examples. In addition to preset filters, users can customize images even more by modifying brightness and contrast
These user-defined image processing tools allow practitioners to establish up to four of their own favorite default settings, making them accessible with the click of a button and resulting in a customized comfort zone for every appointment.
“Too often, introducing new technology to a practice interrupts workflow by requiring users to adapt their way of working around the piece of equipment,” David Moran, regional product manager, intraoral imaging, Carestream Dental, said. “However, the CS Adapt module shapes the technology around users, with filters that adapt to the needs of the practitioner, not the other way around.”
Additionally, CS Adapt’s proprietary algorithms are optimized specifically for RVG 6200 sensors to provide state-of-the-art image processing. The RVG 6200 sensor continues the RVG legacy of durable, digital intraoral sensors with high-resolution images. It features an efficient three-step acquisition process—position, expose, view—and does not require time-consuming fine tuning of exposure to produce a clinically useful image. The RVG 6200 with CS Adapt is available with three warranty options, including an all-new lifetime warranty.
The sensor is included in an intraoral package, along with a CS 1500 intraoral camera, that has been donated by Carestream Dental to be auctioned off in support of the AAE Foundation on Thursday, May 7. Carestream Dental is also donating a CS 8100 3D extraoral imaging system to help raise funds for the Foundation. The system’s 3D imaging technology captures images with 1:1 accuracy without distortion or overlap of anatomy. Selectable 3D programs give endodontists control of the image size, resolution and dose, providing an EndoHD mode (5 cm x 5 cm), for high-resolution scans with 75 µm precision to capture the smallest details of root and canal morphology.
The AAE Annual session takes place May 6-9, Seattle, Wash., at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Visit Carestream Dental in booth #911, May 6-8, to learn more about the CS Adapt module for the RVG 6200 or how to participate in the AAE Foundation auction.

A Randomized Controlled Study of the Use of ProRoot Mineral Trioxide Aggregate and Endocem as Direct Pulp Capping Materials: 3-month versus 1-year Outcomes

Journal of Endodontics
Publication stage: In Press Corrected Proof

The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term clinical outcomes of direct pulp capping (DPC) with ProRoot MTA (Dentsply, Tulsa, OK) and Endocem (Maruchi, Wonju, Korea) as pulp capping materials. To this end, the 1-year cumulative successes of both materials were evaluated and compared with those of the 3-month outcomes in a prospective, randomized controlled trial.

Patients were recruited from the Department of Conservative Dentistry of the Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, South Korea, from January to May 2013. Of the 48 teeth that met the inclusion criteria, 46 teeth were randomly allocated to either ProRoot MTA or Endocem groups (n = 23). Direct pulp capping was performed, and clinical and radiographic examinations were conducted over 1 year after the treatment. Survival analyses were conducted to compare the cumulative successes between ProRoot MTA and Endocem and to evaluate other clinical variables.

Forty-one teeth were recalled 1 year after the treatments (recall rate = 89.13%). There were no significant differences between the cumulative successes of ProRoot MTA and Endocem in either log-rank or Cox proportional hazard regression analyses (P > .05). Among the other clinical variables, cavity type (class I, II, III vs class V) was determined to be significant in both the log-rank test (P = .001) and Cox regression analysis (P = .006).

Both ProRoot MTA and Endocem exhibited similar cumulative successes as direct pulp capping materials up to 1 year. The teeth restored with class V cavities exhibited significantly lower cumulative success rates after direct pulp capping compared with the teeth restored with other types of cavities.

ADA Applauds Final Announcement on Optimal Fluoride Level in Drinking Water

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) yesterday announced that the optimal fluoride level in community water systems is 0.7 parts per million.
The ADA supports the recommendation, which was released for comment four years ago. The new recommendation will help ensure an effective level of fluoride to reduce the incidence of tooth decay, while minimizing the risk of cosmetic fluorosis.
Making optimally fluoridated water more available to Americans on public water systems is one of eight initiatives comprising Action for Dental Health, which is the ADA’s nationwide, community-based movement to improve access to dental car, especially for people who lack adequate access to preventive and restorative care. The ADA’s goal is that 80 percent of the U.S. population on public water systems will receive the cavity-prevention benefits of fluoridated water by 2020.

3M™ True Definition Scanner Wins Silver At Edison Awards Prestigious awards honor outstanding product innovation

ST. PAUL‚ Minn. – (April 24‚ 2015) – Dentists who use the 3M™ True Definition Scanner already know it has game-changing capabilities for a practice. Now, the breakthrough digital scanning device has been recognized by the larger community of inventors. The system was honored with a silver medal Edison Award at a ceremony held April 23 in New York City.

The Edison Awards—named for Thomas Alva Edison, whose inventions earned 1,093 U.S. patents—honor excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design and innovation. Award winners represent “game changing” products and services with innovation centered around four criteria: Concept, Value, Delivery and Impact.
The 3M True Definition Scanner earned the silver medal Edison Award based on its strength in each of the criteria. Judges recognized its marriage of cutting-edge 3D imaging, advanced optics and data analysis algorithms, and its potential to revolutionize the patient’s experience at the dentist. The system’s consistent accuracy with fast scan times, open architecture system with secure cloud-based data, 3D-in-motion technology, small wand, and the system’s affordability were also cited by the panel.

More than 3,000 senior business executives, scientists and academics from across the nation judge Edison Awards nominees, and their votes acknowledge the Finalists’ success in meeting the award’s stringent criteria of quality.

“The 3M True Definition Scanner is bringing advanced digital oral care and truly accurate results to patients and dentists across the globe,” said David Frazee, vice president of Digital, at 3M ESPE Dental. “Recognition from the prestigious Edison Awards is an honor, and validates the commitment to research, development and science that is so important at 3M.”
