Dental ethics for the 21st century featured in September

Sacramento, Calif. — The September 2020 issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association provides real-world applications of ethical principles in dentistry to help dentists translate thoughts on ethical behavior into actions.

“The article and commentaries in this issue explain how ethical behaviors reach far beyond the walls of one’s dental practice,” said Kerry K. Carney, DDS, editor-in-chief of the CDA Journal. “We hope that our readers will gain a better sense of some of the practical aspects of ethics and remain committed to following our codes of ethics.”

The article “Ethics and Law: Truth and Trust in a 21st Century Practice” explores truth and trust as they relate to ethics and the law in dentistry. And the commentary “Business Ethics and Dental Professionalism” examines the conflicts between the dentist’s roles as a professional and as a businessperson.

“Treatment Planning: Making a Case for Its Ethical Importance” discusses the wide range of ethical principles and behaviors that are critical to the maintenance and success of the dental profession today. Lastly, the commentary “How Dentists Can Avoid Bad Choices” explains how effective self-assessment of their behavior and accepting accountability for their choices will help dentists create respect for the dental profession and lead to increased personal and professional satisfaction.
