Gold standard 4.2: New features added to Sidexis 4 imaging software

The award-winning Sidexis 4 image processing software from Dentsply Sirona Imaging is ready for the IDS. With numerous new features, its capabilities are enhanced: upgraded ease of use, even more shortened practice procedures, and increased flexibility. All of this means significant improvements, in particular for intraoral X-rays and when communicating with patients.

Bensheim/Salzburg, March 22, 2017. The 4.2 version for the IDS is an update for the Sidexis 4 imaging software that primarily makes intraoral X-rays more convenient. Additional functions make the procedure even easier and faster, and also contribute to better communication with the patient. It begins with the X-ray imaging itself. With the "Exposure Advisor" feature, the software helps by directly assessing the illumination of the images and adjusting the parameters for future imaging if necessary. For this, a graphical LED strip displays whether the image is underexposed or overexposed. The dentist or assistant can thus check the quality of the image during imaging process. When the image has been created, the improved operating system ensures that even serial intraoral images can be interpreted reliably and quickly with the Xios XG Sensor – without needing to open a large number of windows or different menus. The dynamic sharpness control with settings that can be selected individually for up to five different diagnoses is also integrated seamlessly into Sidexis 4. For imaging carious lesions, these sharpness and contrast settings help in identifying the smallest defects. Brightness and darkness settings emphasize the anatomic structures more clearly and make the dentin-enamel junction easier to identify. This makes the handling and processing of single and serial intraoral images simpler and more versatile – even in retrospect.

Everything users need at a glance

"It is very important for us that users are able to find their way around the software quickly and that all of functions that support the corresponding workflow are directly available to users and optimized accordingly," said Dr. Nadia Amor, Senior Product Manager Imaging Systems at Dentsply Sirona. "We have developed new features and integrated the existing functions even better in order to further simplify operation."

In this way, images from any source can be imported more easily and the sessions can be saved and called up more conveniently as a summary of the current work results. In the patient history timeline, you can now filter by type of image and this means significant time saved when combined with the timeline.

There is also "Getting to know Sidexis 4," an integrated document for a quick overview that displays the software highlights clearly with many images, in particular for functions that are not immediately obvious but that provide real utility.

More options – also in 3D

Another important new feature is the expansion of the open interfaces that Sidexis 4 provides. The software can be integrated optimally into the practice and now also enables the import of 3D DICOM data from third-party suppliers. Such data can be used within the software in a variety of ways. Images the dentist selects from various sources can be displayed clearly in the light box. The new rendering makes all 3D images particularly vivid and offers ideal orientation for dentists and their patients. The "Compare" feature allows images to be displayed next to each other and synchronized for comparison – this is especially useful for treatment planning, monitoring results, and communicating with patients.

Intelligent networking of X-ray systems

The high-performance and user-friendly Sidexis 4 software connects all Dentsply Sirona X-ray units and treatment centers and combines them to provide an intelligently linked complete solution. Sidexis 4 can exchange patient data and images with all commonly used practice management software. Furthermore, X-ray data can be easily electronically transferred – at no great expense and with no loss of quality due to copying.

End-to-End Integrated solutions from Dentsply Sirona: From diagnosis to the final restoration

One year after the merger, at the IDS 2017, Dentsply Sirona will be presenting itself as a full-range provider of integrated solutions for better, safer, faster dental health care.  General practitioners, specialists and their patients all benefit from efficient workflows.
Bensheim/Salzburg, March 21, 2017. "We no longer think in individual products or modules, but in intelligent solutions. This enables us to support dentists and dental technicians to provide better, safer, and faster dental treatments. That is our mission and the reason why we call ourselves 'The Dental Solutions Company'" explained Jeffrey T. Slovin, Chief Executive Officer of Dentsply Sirona at this year's IDS press conference. While dental treatments always take a customized approach, they must adhere to clinically proven processes (protocols). As part of these processes, practitioners use a range of technologies, devices and consumables. If these products and processes are ideally coordinated, this has a positive impact on the treatment: Patients can be provided with improved, more time-efficient and safer treatments. Given its comprehensive market expertise and broad product portfolio, Dentsply Sirona is in an unparalleled position in the industry to intelligently combine the individual products to create a unique workflow, starting from the diagnosis and extending through to the final restoration.
Intelligent solutions for successful treatments
To face every challenge, the company has developed a clinically tested process in which all the steps connect, just like the stations of a metro line: For required flexibility, "the switch possibilities" ensure alternative routes. This "line network" which symbolizes the digital networking of processes opens up a world of opportunities for general practitioners and specialists alike: Depending on the indication, patient's wishes or the practitioner's personal preferences, efficient and successful workflows can be followed to reach the goal quickly and effectively. "Our customers can be confident that the solutions that we offer have been thought through from start to finish and are underpinned by extensive research and documentation. Each year we invest more than $125 million in the development of products and solutions. Over 600 scientists and engineers work together and supervise more than 50 clinical studies annually. We pass on this know-how to our users via the industry's largest training platform comprising approximately 11,000 courses in more than 80 countries. We do this because we want our customers and their patients to be able to rest assured that they are offering and receiving the best possible dental treatment", stated Christopher T. Clark, President and Chief Operating Officer, Technologies.
Strong partner for integrated solutions
When it comes to developing interdisciplinary workflows, the company is already leading the way. For example, the 3D Endo software is a CBCT-based software that guarantees the successful planning of endodontic treatments. To support the actual treatment, Dentsply Sirona Restorative developed an integrated treatment solution from the root to the crown: R2C. Implantology is another area where Dentsply Sirona technologies dovetail perfectly: From diagnostics with 3D imaging to planning with the corresponding software and digital impressions, clinically tested implants can be inserted safely and quickly before being restored with a CAD/CAM solution. Furthermore, the implantology function integrated in the Teneo and Sinius treatment centers offers maximum comfort during treatments.
Innovations for safe workflows down to the last detail
Seamlessly structured processes are enabled thanks to the innovative features and products which Dentsply Sirona will be exhibiting at the IDS 2017: For example, the versatile complete imaging solution Orthophos SL now features a new function which is available as an upgrade. With immediate effect, the radiation dose for 3D images can be reduced to a level for certain clinical indications which, to date, has only been associated with 2D images. The CEREC software has also been comprehensively updated to transform it into a system offering almost unlimited possibilities: The CEREC SW 4.5 with its intelligent tools can make it even easier for newcomers to enter the world of digital prosthetics. The new Dentsply Sirona Hub supports the integration of CEREC into the practice via its "Plug & Play" interfaces. All clinical data and the backup of the CAD/CAM data can thus be saved and archived centrally and called up at any time as needed.
For endodontics, the WaveOne Gold family of reciprocating files has been enhanced to include the WaveOne Gold Glider. It is the first reciprocating glide path file on the market. The metallurgical state-of-the-art WaveOne Gold instruments facilitate root canal preparations with an efficient one file technique.
In the field of implantology, the OsseoSpeed Profile EV implant (Astra Tech Implant System) has been developed for implant patients with an extremely reduced bone volume. Thanks to this solution, augmentation is now often no longer necessary.
In handpieces, the short version S-Line has been added to the contra-angle series T2 and T3. This new version impresses with its reduced overall weight. The hygiene handpiece Midwest RDH and the cordless prophylaxis system Nupro Freedom mark further additions to the handpiece range.
For the laboratory, the company offers software solutions such as the latest updates for inLab CAD SW 16.0 and inLab CAM SW 16.0; material innovations like Celtra Press (the pressable ZLS), Cercon xt (the extra translucent zirconia), and inCoris CCB (the new sintered metal disc for the inLab MC X5 milling unit); and the Atlantis CustomBase solution for screw-retained single tooth restorations.
"With its extensive product and solution innovations, Dentsply Sirona has once again demonstrated its commitment to using digital technologies to enable dental professionals to provide better, safer and faster dental care", stressed Jeffrey T. Slovin. "It is all about supporting our customers in practices and laboratories.”

Digital, flexible and open – CEREC, a complete system for restorations, implantology and orthodontics

With CEREC, Dentsply Sirona provides a comprehensive and proven digital system that can be used in a variety of ways: For delivering restorations in a single visit, guided placement and restoration of implants and also for orthodontic solutions. In order to make it even more flexible, the data from the digital impression can now be exported in STL format and used for additional applications.
Bensheim/Salzburg, March 21, 2017. More than 30 years ago Dentsply Sirona brought CEREC to the market, a system which pioneered single visit dentistry. CEREC has been continually developed in that time so that not only restorations, but also implant drill guides, custom implant prosthetics and even orthodontic indications are covered by the versatile system.
In so doing, Dentsply Sirona set an important trend in dentistry: Treatment concepts with digital technology are now an emerging expectation amongst dental patients. CEREC not only provides many patient benefits here, the clinical success has also been demonstrated in more than 250 studies. When it comes to the use of CAD/CAM in the dental practice, the question is less whether it can be integrated into the existing workflows, but more how this can be achieved in the best possible manner.
CEREC supports the successful use by the practitioner with a large number of application options. One of these is new: The CEREC system has now been opened up for the export of scan data in STL format. This means that the data from the digital impression can now also be used in software products from other manufacturers. This opens up new possibilities for dentists who are gradually digitizing their practices. They can use the CEREC Omnicam scans in cooperation with their dental laboratory or other clinical planning software.
Flexibility with open data
The requirements that practices place on digital technologies have diversified in the past few years - the solutions are becoming ever more individual. Dentsply Sirona meets these differing needs with the extension of the applications for CEREC - for more patient comfort, time savings during the treatment and for even better cost-effectiveness for the practice. The STL export of scan data is the latest example of this: "The provision of single visit dentistry with CEREC does not need an open file, since CEREC is complete as it is. However, we see in the last few years that many other clinical applications are being used in the practice and customers are asking to use their CEREC digital impressions in those applications." explained Roddy MacLeod, Group Vice President Dentsply Sirona CAD/CAM. “It made sense to us and now the option of exporting the scan data however puts our customers in a position of being able to use CEREC with additional solutions in a digital world that is becoming ever larger."
Dentists can send the CEREC scans to a laboratory of their choice to order restorations. Compatibility with all commonly used design programs that are employed in laboratories is guaranteed by the STL format. The scan data can also be loaded into implant planning software in order to provide the practitioner with support in the preparations for the implant procedure.
The open format also enables the practice team to import the CEREC Omnicam scans into any other clinical or practice management software and to archive it there.
The corresponding software licenses will be available at the same time as the new CEREC SW 4.5.

Supporting the full implant treatment process – from planning to final restoration

With the comprehensive Dentsply Sirona Implants solutions portfolio, dental professionals can rest assured that they have the support they need for the full implant treatment process to restore function, esthetics and confidence to their patients.

Mölndal/Salzburg, March, 20, 2017. The implant treatment process contains many steps - from imaging and diagnosis, treatment planning and implant surgery to abutment selection, restorative solutions and patient follow-up. At IDS, Dentsply Sirona Implants presents several new solutions to their already extensive portfolio to further support dental professionals in their daily work.
Implant solutions – The SmartFix concept

SmartFix is a treatment concept that can provide edentulous patients with an immediate fixed, full-arch prosthesis, supported by only four implants. The SmartFix concept includes an angulated abutment that comes together with a short and flexible abutment holder for easier handling.  The option of angulating the screw access channel through the prosthesis opens up for ideal esthetics and function.
This concept is an easy and cost-effective treatment that offers improved treatment satisfaction for the patient and practice growth for the dental professional. SmartFix is now available for the Astra Tech Implant System EV product line, including Profile EV. SmartFix is already available for Xive and Ankylos implant systems.
For less bone augmentation
Almost 40% of all implant sites present with a sloped alveolar ridge after healing. The OsseoSpeed Profile EV implant (Astra Tech Implant System) is a uniquely shaped, patented implant specifically designed for just this clinical situation. It is designed to follow the natural shape of the bone, supporting the soft tissue by preserving marginal bone 360 degrees around the implant. In addition, it can help to eliminate the need for bone augmentation procedures; 58% of all sloped implant sites have a reduced need for augmentation when using the OsseoSpeed Profile implant.*
Newly published results on OsseoSpeed Profile implants show bone preservation, increased soft tissue volume and regain of keratinized mucosa in patients with compromised soft tissue conditions. PD Dr. Robert Nölken, co-author of the study, explains: “We have seen a great deal of improvement on the peri-implant soft tissue in our research follow-up. This allows us to achieve a good esthetic outcome for patients with thin biotypes.” This prospective, 2-year follow-up, multicenter study investigates OsseoSpeed Profile EV implant survival rate, soft and hard tissue maintenance following placement in healed sites of the posterior mandible. (twenty-four centers, 184 patients and 238 implants are included in the study).

Digital supported screw-retained solutions
The Atlantis CustomBase solution combines an Atlantis Abutment and an Atlantis Crown with a screw access hole. The crown is cemented to the abutment extra orally and then all is screw-retained into the implant, avoiding potential complications caused by excess cement. The crown can be designed in the customer’s own software by ordering a unique digital file, with the screw hole indicated.
Since the Virtual Atlantis Design (VAD) software takes the edentulous space with surrounding teeth and soft tissue anatomy into consideration, the Atlantis CustomBase solution is a premium single-tooth screw-retained solution providing patient-specific design of core height and optimized retention and design. This provides a result that replicates natural tooth function and esthetics. Moreover, the Atlantis Custom Base solution provides customized emergence profile for enhanced soft-tissue management and placement of material junction considering biological principles. The Atlantis CustomBase solution is available for single-tooth, screw-retained restorations on all major implant systems.
The upcoming integrated connectivity between Atlantis WebOrder and Sirona Connect SW will make the ordering of all Atlantis abutments solutions easy accessible for the CEREC Omnicam users. The digital impression is taken with either a ScanPost or an Atlantis IO FLO.

DWS launches DFAB 3-D printer for restorations within 20 minutes

COLOGNE, Germany: After a preview at the Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting in the US in February, Italian company DWS will be officially launching its new DFAB 3-D printing solution at the International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne. The product features the company’s own Photoshade technology, which allows for the production of dental prostheses in natural shades in a single visit.

DFAB is a 3-D printer developed for general dentists and prosthodontists with the purpose of increasing the efficiency and reducing the number of procedures for the production of dental prostheses. It produces up to five-element bridges in less than 20 minutes. The innovation behind this is the Photoshade technology, a system that helps reproduce the shades of the patient’s teeth, giving the prosthesis a natural appearance.

Starting from an STL file, produced after an intra-oral scan, the user selects the shades of the restoration using the software. The colours can be selected from a range between A1 and A3.5 on the VITA scale (VITA Zahnfabrik); as a result, the finished product obtained is customized.

DFAB is an integrated system with disposable cartridges containing TEMPORIS, a Class IIa biocompatible material. Recent studies and tests on this material have shown mechanical strength values that are comparable to a well-established restorative resin material made of hybrid composite.[1] The cartridges are ready to use and were developed to maintain the workplace hygiene, avoiding the risk of accidental contamination. The printer does not produce any noise or dust and does not require tooling.

DFAB has a minimal design that adds value to the dental clinic. It is available in desktop and chairside versions with a 7 in. touch-screen computer.

More information can be found at www.dwssystems.com/dfab. Visitors to IDS may also visit the company’s booth (A069) in Hall 4.1.

Natural Dental Implants AG Announces 3D Printed REPLICATE® Tooth at International Dental Show in Cologne

Company’s Patent Portfolio Offers Unique Opportunity to Develop the Next Generation of Patient-Specific Tooth Replacement Solutions
BERLIN, GERMANY – March 20, 2017 – Natural Dental Implants AG (NDI) today announced the development of a 3D printed version of the REPLICATE Tooth. NDI began working on its first generation of customized tooth replacement products and filing patents in 2006, giving the Company a unique advantage in the market. The 3D printed REPLICATE Tooth, which the Company will have at the International Dental Show (Hall 3.1, Aisle H, Booth 49), features a titanium root portion and a zirconia abutment portion, like the commercially available version of the REPLICATE Tooth currently made by 5-axis CNC milling.
According to Ruedger Rubbert, CEO of Natural Dental Implants AG, “We started thinking about customized tooth replacement systems more than ten years ago. Our patent portfolio includes endossoeus and perio-integrative implementations, various surface enhancements, CAD/CAM systems, and manufacturing technologies, utilized in rapid prototyping methods and 3D printing. This enables industrialized and chair‑side fabrication of individually shaped dental implants.” He added, “Using new technologies like 3D printing helps us reduce costs and provide even more value to our customers.”
The Company has a working prototype and expects to begin extensive product testing this year.
About the REPLICATE Immediate Tooth Replacement System and Natural Dental Implants:
The REPLICATE® System features the REPLICATE Tooth, an anatomically-shaped, 100% customized, titanium-zirconia tooth, and the REPLICATE Temporary Protective Crown, a customized cover shield designed to protect the REPLICATE Tooth during the healing process. This new approach to single-tooth replacement offers patients an immediate, minimally invasive alternative to traditional dental implants and three-unit bridges.
The REPLICATE Tooth is an anatomical copy of the patient’s natural tooth that fits into the space occupied by the tooth being removed. It is one piece; a super-hydrophilic titanium root fused to a zirconia preparation with an emerging profile like that of a natural tooth. Each REPLICATE Tooth component is designed individually and can be modified to overcome anatomical limitations or to meet specific clinical requirements. The process starts with a DVT/CBCT scan and dental impression. The dentist submits the data prior to the tooth being extracted, NDI designs that patient’s custom REPLICATE Tooth, manufactures it and delivers it sterile, ready to be placed at the extraction appointment. Immediately after the extraction, the REPLICATE Tooth is inserted into the tooth socket, without drilling, and covered with the REPLICATE Temporary Protective Crown until it osseointegrates. Once osseointegration is complete the REPLICATE Temporary Protective Crown is removed and a final crown is placed.
Natural Dental Implants AG, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and a U.S. subsidiary based in Dallas, Texas, was founded in 2006 to develop the intellectual property behind the REPLICATE Immediate Tooth Replacement System. The REPLICATE System is available in the European Union and will be offered in the United States pending FDA approval. Visit www.replicatetooth.com to learn more.
